Local Study
This course was run for the first time in May 2008. In order to promote the idea of successful learners and responsible citizens the Social Subjects faculty ran it's first combined course. Pupils were given 5 weeks to study the local area and also spent one day researching Laurencekirk, Montrose, St.Cyrus, Edzell and Fettercairn. Each first year class was then split into groups and they worked on a presentation. This presentation was then showcased to parents on the evening of 27th May.
The Rights and Needs of Children – Scotland, Europe and the World.
This is the first course which pupils study in this subject. It enables them to develop a knowledge and understanding of the lives of children in Scottish society and in the European and global community. In doing so, the pupils learn to appreciate the value of basic human rights. The course gives pupils an opportunity to make informed comparisons between different societies and allows them to carry out and present independent research.
Living in Democratic Scotland
This course gives pupils an essential introduction to the legal and political system in Scotland and demonstrates how the election process works. The first weeks introduce the concepts and vocabulary involved. Following this preparation, the pupils all participate in a mini-election and are required to plan and implement an election campaign for a fictional party. There is much opportunity to develop team-working styles and for individual pupils to present their ideas creatively.
European/African/China Conflict Topic
This course will run for the first time in February 2009. It aims to study Europe, Africa and China. It will give pupils an understanding of conflict and why it happens. This topic will be a joint Social Subjects faculty course and will include elements of History, Modern Studies and Geography.
