Higher
Following a grade 1 or 2 at Standard Grade pupils have the option to select Higher Modern Studies. This is a valuable course which offers pupils a range of experiences and skills.
Purpose
The purpose of this course is to develop knowledge and understanding of political, social and international issues and to promote the development of the critical skills of analysis, synthesis, evaluating and decision-making.
Recommended Entry
Students are expected to have attained:
A credit 1 or 2 at Standard Grade Modern Studies or another social subject
A Higher in another social subject
S5 students should also be attempting one year English at Higher level
Course
The course covers a number of key areas:
Study Theme 1B - Decision Making in Central Government
This theme focuses on British politics and examines the workings of both the Prime Minister and Parliament. In addition, this section also examines the impact of pressure groups and the media on decision making.
Study Theme 1D - Electoral Systems and Voting Influences
In this section pupils study the impact of different voting systems on politics. Particular focus is given to First Past the Post and Proportional Representation. Furthermore, pupils also study influences on voting behaviour.
Study Theme 2 - Wealth and Health
This is the largest section in the course and covers a range of issues. The focus is on the main causes of wealth and health inequalities in the UK. The topic also studies the impact of government policies on wealth and health in the UK
Study Theme 3C - The USA
This theme studies the USA and examines social and political life in America. The powers of the President, Congress, immigration issues and inequalities are the key study areas.
Study Theme 3F - Global Security
The final study areas examines the main threats to world peace today. In addition, this section studies the impact of the UN and NATO on world affairs.
Assessment
Pupils are required to complete two papers in the exam. Paper 1 lasts for 90 minutes and pupils have to complete 4 essays. In contrast, paper two is a written report on a wealth and health topic. It is crucial that pupils keep up to date with current affairs - the exam demands pupils include up to date evidence in their answers.
Value of Course
Higher Modern Studies gives pupils a number of transferable skills. Students are required to produce quality essays and this will improve both their analytical and extended writing skills. Higher Modern Studies offers students a number of career opportunities - lawyers, teaching, civil service and public sector workers are some examples.
