Advanced Higher
Following a successful result at Higher level pupils can decide to study Advanced Higher Modern Studies.
Purpose
The purpose of this course is to
develop knowledge and understanding, evaluative and investigative
skills around the topic of Law and Order in the UK.
Recommended Entry
Students are expected to have attained: a pass in Higher Modern Studies or a pass in another Higher social
subject or RMPS by negotiation with the Principal Teacher.
Course
The Advanced Higher course studies Law and Order in the UK. Students will examine the causes of crime and how it impacts on society. In addition, the course also studies the penal system in the UK and whether prisons work. Finally, students also analyse the impact of government policies in British society.
Assessment
Students will complete one three hour exam. Within this exam students will complete two essays and a number of source questions. The course also requires students to submit a dissertation on a topic of their choice.
Value of Course
Through studying advanced higher students will gain more independence and will feel more prepared for future college or university study. Modern Studies is recognised as a key subject which offers a number of important skills.
