THE PURPOSE OF THE PUPIL SUPPORT DEPARTMENT

The Pupil Support Department works to support the whole school priority No.2 A Curriculum for Excellence (Literacy and Numeracy)

As far as possible pupils of all abilities within the Mearns Academy catchment area should have their educational needs met at the school with varying degrees of support as required

The Pupil Support Department at Mearns Academy offers support in three main areas.
1.     Support for Learning  (SFL)
2.     Special Educational Needs (SEN)
3.     Behaviour Support (BS)

The Purpose of SFL is to support pupils with learning difficulties in the mainstream of Mearns Academy.  Support is delivered in class and in the SFL room 35. The SFL team supports, but does not deliver, curriculum. Support includes helping staff to meet the needs of the pupils in their classes.

The Purpose of SEN is to support pupils who have significant learning difficulties.  Part of this support is in mainstream classes and part of the support is delivered in the SEN room 34. The SEN team delivers literacy and numeracy curriculum.

The Purpose of BS is to support pupils with behavioural difficulties. Support is delivered in mainstream classes, in the BS Room 33 and in Mrs. Hearty’s office. The BS team also acts as an “alternatives to exclusion” service where pupils who would previously have been excluded from the school  “serve out” their exclusion in R.33 to keep them up to date with their education and avoid social isolation.
