S1/S2 History

Pupils are given the opportunity to study a range of historical content in both first and second year. This content covers a vast time period and also focuses on different eras. Pupils study the following courses:

Wallace, Bruce and the Wars of Independence

In this course pupils study the conflict between Scotland and England in the 13th and 14th centuries. In addition, they are given the chance to examine the impact of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. It is important pupils study this time period as it is a key part of Scottish History.

Local Study

This course was run for the first time in May 2008. In order to promote the idea of successful learners and responsible citizens the Social Subjects faculty ran it's first combined course. Pupils were given 5 weeks to study the local area and also spent one day researching Laurencekirk, Montrose, St.Cyrus, Edzell and Fettercairn. Each first year class was then split into groups and they worked on a presentation. This presentation was then showcased to parents on the evening of 27th May.

The Holocaust

This course has been introduced to the department for the first time this year. It is the view of teaching staff that pupils should be given the opportunity to study this course and understand why the Holocaust happened. This is important as lessons from the Holocaust are still relevant today. Pupils will study a range of Jewish primary source evidence and will be encouraged to reflect on experiences of Holocaust individuals.

European/African/China Conflict Topic

This course will run for the first time in February 2009. It aims to study Europe, Africa and China. It will give pupils an understanding of conflict and why it happens. This topic will be a joint Social Subjects faculty course and will include elements of History, Modern Studies and Geography.
