Advanced Higher

Following a successful result at Higher level pupils can decide to study Advanced Higher History.

Purpose

The purpose of this course is to enhance knowledge and understanding of the subject by providing a study in depth of a significant historical period.  This will continue the development of evaluation and investigative skills developed at Higher level.

Recommended Entry

Students would normally be expected to have achieved a pass at Higher level in History.  In exceptional cases a candidate may be accepted without having sat a Higher course in this subject but this would be dependent on success at Higher level in compatible subjects notably English and would have to be negotiated with the Principal Teacher of Social Subjects.

Course

The department focuses on the US Civil War and studies the main reasons behind this conflict.

Assessment

Students are required to complete one three hour paper where they attempt two essays and a number of source questions. In addition, students are also required to submit a dissertation on a topic of their choice.

University Preparation

Advanced Higher History requires a great deal of independent work - this is ideal in preparing students for the demands of university life.
