Higher
At the end of fourth year pupils can decide to study Higher History. However, pupils usually have to obtain a credit Standard Grade pass in History.
Purpose
The purpose of this course is to provide breadth and depth in the knowledge and understanding of historical concepts through study of chosen contexts. It is also intended to develop skills of evaluating events and sources and of investigating issues.
Recommended Entry
Students would be expected to have attained a grade 1 or 2 at Standard Grade in History or in other compatible subjects notably English. There may be additional places available for pupils who do not meet the entry requirements – this can be done through negotiation with the Principal Teacher of Social Subjects.
Course
The course is divided into three areas:
Britain 1850-1979
Russia: 1880s - 1920s
Appeasement and the Road to War
Assessment
Pupils are required to complete three NABs throughout the year. The external exam is split into two papers. Paper one asks pupils to complete two essays on Britain and Russia. Meanwhile, paper 2 tests the ability to analyse sources on Appeasement and the Road to War. In addition, pupils are also required to complete an extended essay on a subject of their choice.
Career Paths
History offers pupils a number of appropriate career paths. The skills developed by pupils can be applied across a whole range of employment sectors. Specialist jobs such as teaching, lawyers, journalists and public sector workers are 'tailor made' for students who study History.
