Importance of History

The study of History is crucial in understanding society today and allows us to appreciate the sacrifices made by previous generations. History also gives pupils a number of key life skills and provides them with a number of valuable experiences. Pupils are given the chance to study important moments in history. Events such as the Wars of Independence, The Holocaust and World War One are just some of the topics studied by pupils. The department aims to cover key historical areas within S1 and S2. As pupils progress throughout the school the focus is on Later Modern History.

Resources

History is taught in two main classroom areas. Both of these rooms are equipped with an interactive whiteboard and also contain a number of computers. The department is fortunate to have a wide range of textbooks, DVDs and CDs - these help to enhance the quality of teaching.

Excursions

The department is very keen to organise a number of excursions. In recent years pupils have visited the Gordon Highlanders Museum and the Scottish Mining Museum. In October 2007 the department also participated in the Lessons from Auschwitz project.
