Welcome to the chemistry department web site. Please have a good look round our department pages.
In the site you will find information on the courses offered in the department, and weblinks with lots of revision resources.
Courses
Upon arrival at Mearns Academy, pupils undertake a general science course which is made up of branches from all the three main sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Biology).
This course is currently being updated to meet the aims of Curriculum for Excellence.
Standard Grade course (S3/4)
Towards the end of S2 pupils elect to study one, or more, of the three core sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Biololgy) in S3/S4 years.
The Chemistry course is taught in mixed ability General and Credit classes. All pupils are entered for both General and Credit exams.
Further details of the course and its arrangement can be obtained via this link to the SQA
Higher Course(S5 and S6)
In S5/S6, students who obtained Credit pass at Standard Grade have the option to study the Higher Chemistry course.
This contains three main units:
Unit 1 Energy Matters
Unit 2 The World of Carbon
Unit 3 Chemical Reactions
Further details of the course and its arrangement can be obtained via this link to the SQA Higher.
Advanced Higher courses (S6)Obtaining a successful pass in Higher Chemistry gives students the option to study Advanced Higher Chemistry within the school.
This involves completing a chemical investigation as well as three units of work.
Unit 1 Electronic Structure and the Periodic Table
Unit 2 Principles of Chemical Reactions
Unit 3 Organic Chemistry
Further details of the course and its arrangement can be obtained via this link to the SQA Advanced Higher.
